Garmin Oregon 550 and 550t Now Available for Pre-order Through GPS City

Las Vegas, NV (PRWEB) May 9, 2009 -- Garmin International announced their anticipated Oregon 550 and Oregon 550t models on Thursday, April 7th. Following the announcement by Garmin, GPS City officially released the items for online pre-order. The units are anticipated to ship in mid-July, and will carry a host of new features that will likely make the ground-breaking handheld GPS the new "must have" for hikers, geocachers, bikers, and others in need of reliable handheld GPS solution.

The most noteworthy upgrade to its predecessor (the Oregon 300) is the addition of a built-in waterproof 3.2 megapixel autofocus camera, allowing users to both navigate their way through the great outdoors and capture images of their journey, all on the same device. Users will be able to upload and share their pictures using Google's popular Picasa program and myGarmin.com, and with the new high-speed USB port available in the Oregon, users can also transfer pictures, maps, and data between the unit and their PC or Mac.

In addition to the groundbreaking camera integration, the Oregon 550 will feature a built-in DEM (digital elevation model) with shading and elevation profiles so that users can get an idea of the terrain that lies ahead. Much like those who upgraded to the Oregon 400t from the 300, those who upgrade to the Oregon 550t model will have US 100K Topographic mapping pre-loaded on their device. GPS City will also be offering an exclusive model with bundled Canadian Topographic mapping.

Listening to user feedback about the popular Oregon 300, Garmin has increased the brightness of the new 550's screen and has also added a three-axis compass that enables the unit to get an accurate compass reading regardless of the angle at which it is held.

"As everyone looks for ways to do more with less, Oregon 550 and Oregon 550t can be the one GPS device you turn to for all of your activities, in any climate, on any terrain, at any time of year," said Garmin VP for worldwide sales Dan Bartel. "Easy enough for beginners to master, Oregon will guide you in your adventures, capture the highlights and bring them back home." By even including rechargeable batteries and a charger, Garmin certainly has thought of just about everything to make sure the Oregon 550 will be easy, functional, and fun to use.

The Oregon 550 is priced at $499.99, and the Oregon 550t at $599.99. Both are currently available for pre-order from GPS City.
